I love a good book-ish book, and this stunningly illustrated picture book biography does not disappoint.
Accompanied by mixed media illustrations, this book tells the story of Augusta Baker, the first Black coordinator of children's services at the New York Public Library. From her childhood listening to and loving stories, to her career as a librarian seeking out and showcasing honest caring depictions of Black folks in books, and the position created just for her as the master Storyteller-in-Residence at the Univeristy of South Carolina, we learn about her passion for stories and her support of educators, librarians, and writers.
I highly recommend reading (and re-reading) this book to learn more about this important figure in library history.
Backmatter includes a timeline of Augusta Baker's life, a list of citations, and a powerful author's note accompanied by photographs.
